IgniteOKC's blog

So you’re going to IgniteOKC 3…

It’s here! After months of preparation, some awesome talk submissions, and a VIP ticket sell-out, we’re finally ready to Ignite… tonight! Below are all the important details you need to know if you’re coming to IgniteOKC 3. You’re coming, right?

IgniteOKC 3 Schedule of Events

5:00 pm – 7:00 pm

SXSW preview at IgniteOKC 3

IgniteOKC’s goal is to share the sparks of big ideas and ignite inspiration in Oklahoma City’s business and creative communities. Later this month, the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber (an IgniteOKC sponsor since our first event), i2E, Oklahoma Film and Music Office and the Oklahoma City Coworking Collaborative are helping to spread the message of Oklahoma creativity and innovation a little further south at the 2011 South By Southwest Conference and Festival (SXSW).

One week: Talks, a Party and Prizes!

We’re one week from IgniteOKC 3, and the excitement and anticipation is palpable. Well, it certainly is for those of us working hard behind the scenes anyway. Below are some of the reasons we believe we’re bringing you the best IgniteOKC yet.

The Talks
The response to our call for submissions was wonderful, and it was no easy task culling that list down. But we did it, and the roster we’ve put together for IgniteOKC 3 should have a little something for everyone, from Isaac Newton to breaking-and-entering. Check out all the talks here.

Two weeks! Get your VIP tickets now!

It’s hard to believe we’re less than two weeks away from Ignite OKC 3. The talks have been submitted for consideration, and they’re some of the best we’ve seen yet. We’ll be announcing the speaker line-up soon, so stay tuned.

We’ve also made some new additions to the program this go-around that we’re pretty darn convinced are going to make this an Ignite you don’t want to miss. We’ll be announcing more details soon, but one new addition that has already launched is VIP tickets.

VIP Tickets
Ignite OKC is selling VIP tickets online for $10, with 100% of the proceeds going to the Oklahoma City Metro Literacy Coalition. Now you can guarantee that you’ll have a seat in the theater March 3 to see some awesome talks AND get a nice warm-and-fuzzy feeling about doing it.

We’ve come a long way, baby.

Above all else, IgniteOKC is about introducing people from a wide variety of professions and backgrounds to something new in their community.  It’s about informing people and making connections that benefit everyone involved.  People should come to IgniteOKC expecting to learn something new – whether it’s hearing about new research, becoming a foster parent, or playing the best game of Monopoly, ever. With Oklahoma City’s second Ignite event just over two weeks away, let’s take a moment to reflect on the trip up to this point.

In September 2009, a few members of our leadership team (some unknown to each other at the time) attended Oklahoma’s first ever Ignite event at the Blue Dome Diner in Tulsa.  Inspired by the presentations and our Ignite Tulsa compatriots, Emily Campbell organized a meeting to start planning IgniteOKC.

It's a SELLOUT!

The first ever Ignite OKC is just a week away. And thanks to your support (not to mention some stupendously interesting talk submissions) we're expecting a sellout crowd of more than 270 to pack Lyric Theater for the event.

If you're one of the lucky few who registered for a FREE ticket, here are a couple of reminders:

- There is no "will call." If you don’t have an Eventbrite ticket... you don’t have a ticket.

- You will need the print-out of your ticket to get in the door.

- If you are a greenie, you can show us an electronic view of your ticket on your smartphone.

- If you forget…you’ll need to get in the “general admission” line.

How To Make Your Presentation POP!

So you've submitted a talk for Ignite OKC. You've come up with a clever title and crafted a description that will surely lure voters your way. You've bulleted out your points. You've timed out your speech. You've made certain you actually have five minutes worth of things for people to hear...

But wait.

What about what those people will see? You panic. Rifling through your ideas, you scour Flickr and Google Images looking for anything that will help you illustrate your topic. You have to put something on the screen. Anything. Right?

Slow down there, gipper. There's definitely a right (and a wrong) way to aesthetically augment your talk.

Here are five good tips for making your Ignite OKC presentation POP:

Creating Your "Braveheart Moment"

“They may take our lives, but they’ll never take… OUR FREEEDOM!!"

  --William Wallace, Braveheart

Behold the power of a good speech. Whether delivered on the silver screen, in the locker room or at the steps of the Capitol, well-placed words almost always ignite activism and empathy (and sometimes even riots) among the audiences fortunate enough to hear them first hand. Some folks get goosebumps. Others shed tears. But all experience an emotional response that reflects the aptitude of the speaker and the gravity of the speech.
